Podiatry

Podiatry is a health area specialized in the assessment, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of foot disorders.

Our feet are the base of our body supporting all its weight. They represent a big importance for our movements. However, our feet are still very vulnerable and complex to the development of pathologies and wounds.

In Podiatry, the intervention areas are many. Our intervention areas are:

  • Callus and calluses;
  • Onychomycosis;
  • Onychocryptosis;
  • Diabetic foot.

Callus and calluses are circumscribed areas of hyperkeratosis in places of constant pressure or friction.

The diagnosis is based on the observation and initial assessment in person. This is performed by a health professional specialized in the field of Podiatry.

The treatment is mostly done by manual abrasion, through specific material. There might be the need to use pharmacological agents. Surgery is rarely indicated.

The Podiatry material must be supplied by the caregiver.

The nursing material is provided by the Nurse, with exception of the nursing material for continuous use, which must be indicated by the Nurse and provided by the caregiver.

It is a fungal infection that occurs in the blade, the nail bed or both, on the nails, wether from hands or feet.

Nails with onychomycosis are deformed, harder, yellowish or white colored.

The ingrown nail represents a curving or invasion of the side of the nail into the edges of it, causing pain.

The treatment usually involves excision of the nail and destruction of the adjacent nail matrix. It should always be performed by specialized health professionals.

The nursing material is provided by the Nurse, with exception of the nursing material for continuous use, which must be indicated by the Nurse and provided by the caregiver.

Diabetics are more likely to develop foot problems, due to two main reasons: neuropathy (nerve damage) and angiopathy (poor blood circulation). Neuropathy causes loss of sensibility which means that the diabetic does not feel the warning signs such as pain or discomfort in the extremities. Angiopathy in the lower limbs reduces the capacity of healing and cure, even of small wounds, leading to being easily infected.

A diabetic person should maintain constant attention and alertness to their feet.

Especially in diabetes, prevention is the best treatment.
